The IPPS Auckland conference from 22 to 25 May this year has attracted a superb line up of 18 speakers including 8 overseas presenters. In addition there will be two workshops. The first workshop will be a panel-type discussion on selecting and commercializing new cultivars. The panelists will be Keith Hammett, Eddie Welsh, Chris Barnaby, Ian Duncalf and Robert Bett. The second workshop will be a follow up to the Phormium workshop held at last year’s conference. David King will summarize his findings to date.
And a word to the wise – don’t miss the Thursday evening demonstration!
Jim Johnson from the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Extension Service will present a paper titles “A Picture is Worth ……”. Jim has taken thousands of photos for presentation and diagnostic purposes. Relative to plant photography, Jim will look at the strengths and weaknesses of the digital platform, digital terminology, tips to take better digital photos, picking equipment and software, and techniques to streamline processing. Your picture can be worth 1000 words.
Professor Dave Hanning is from the California Polytechnic State University. Dave has made over 30 plant collecting trips to Mexico over the last 30 years searching for new and interesting plants. He has collected mostly Tillandsias, orchids, caudiciform plants, succulents but also anything else that’s interesting! The title of his paper is Plant Collecting in Mexico: Blood, Sweat and Tillandsias.
Clive Larkman has a degree in botany and owns with his wife Di a specialist propagation nursery in Melbourne’s Yarra valley. They grow over 2500 varieties including much lavender. Clive will discuss the differences between growing for commercial growers and the nursery trade.

Dr Totik Sri Mariani from the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia will present a poster on Wasabi. Professor Ted Bilderback from North Carolina State University will present on managing container substrates. Dr Ricky Bates from Penn State University speaks on the evaluation and introduction of Mediterranean firs in the eastern USA.
