Born November 1941 descending from Scottish Heritage, he is the son of a plumber and drainer.
Disappointing his father by not becoming a plumber, he went into the grocery industry. After a few years there he entered the horticulture sector and became a florist. He did this for three decades and during this period he met his first wife and started a family.
Then he had a sudden change in life and became an auctioneer for a produce company and as a company representative for FM Winstone Ltd; an horticultural supply company dealing with produce, fruit, floral and nursery sundries.
He met his current wife and they started their own horticultural supply business which became the benchmark in our industry.
He has been attending our conferences for over 20 years and joined The Australian Region of IPPS in 2000. Almost every year he could be seen sneaking out for a cigarette during the sessions. He has always been quick to support the conferences by donating items for the auction, buying items at the auction – sometimes he bought the items he donated!
He never forgot his humble roots and has been a passionate supporter of IPPS and its principles. Over the last 20 years he has paid the initial years membership fees for many young propagators.
He was a major influence in helping the Japan region get started and has been a member of that region since its inception. He is also a member of the New Zealand region. In fact, we believe he is the only multi region member. He has served on the board of the Japan Region, has been a board member and is a past president of the NZ region. He has been the NZ and Japanese delegate to the International Board.
Despite now being retired he continues to champion the IPPS wherever he goes, encourages people to join IPPS and take an active part in field-days, conferences and whenever opportunities arise.
He is a true IPPS international ambassador in every sense of the word. In fact in the words of one Australian member “he is the only IPPS member who can be called an “IPPS Conference Junkie” and has probably attended more conferences than any other member'.
